As the end of term approaches, many students find themselves juggling exams, coursework deadlines and the challenge of packing up their accommodation. While moving out can feel overwhelming, a little planning can make the whole process much easier.

At McComb Students, we know this time of year can be stressful. That’s why we’re always happy to help our tenants with any questions about moving out, packing up and preparing for the summer.

Whether you’re heading home for the summer holidays, moving into a new property or returning to McComb Students next year, these simple tips can help make your move as smooth as possible.

Start Packing Early

One of the biggest mistakes students make is leaving everything until the final few days. Packing little and often is much less stressful than trying to do everything in one weekend.

Start with items you don’t use every day, such as spare kitchen equipment, decorations and seasonal clothing.

Sort and Declutter

Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of things you no longer need.

Create three simple piles:

  • Keep
  • Donate or Sell
  • Bin

The less you take home, the easier your move will be.

Use What You Already Have

You don’t need dozens of cardboard boxes. Suitcases, laundry baskets, backpacks and storage tubs can all help transport your belongings safely and save money.

Label Everything

It might seem obvious, but labelling boxes can save a huge amount of time later.

A quick note such as “Kitchen Items” or “Bedroom Essentials” makes unpacking much easier when you arrive at your next destination.

Pack Similar Items Together

Try to organise your belongings into categories such as:

  • Clothes
  • Books
  • Electronics
  • Kitchen Items
  • Study Materials

This makes unpacking much more straightforward and helps avoid losing important items.

Protect Fragile Belongings

Wrap breakable items in towels, bedding or clothing to help prevent damage during transport.

This not only protects your belongings but also reduces the need for additional packing materials.

Keep Essentials Close By

Pack a small bag containing items you’ll need immediately, including:

  • Phone charger
  • Toiletries
  • Medication
  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Important documents

You’ll thank yourself later.

Don’t Overload Boxes

Heavy items such as textbooks should be packed into smaller boxes or bags.

Larger containers are better suited to lighter items such as bedding and clothing.

Ask for Help

Moving is always easier with friends or family helping out. Plus, it’s a great excuse to reward everyone with a takeaway afterwards.
