As we say goodbye to 2020 and lock it all in a pandora’s box of a time capsule, we enter not just another new year but a new semester. It may have felt like a long one, but we got there, and it wasn’t all bad. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of the first semester of this academic year with McComb students.
1. Quizzes
From Game of Thrones to Football, if you’re an expert on quite literally anything, odds are you’ll have your chance to ascend the ranks of trivia royalty amidst you and your flatmates. And if that isn’t enough the winning flat gets a free pizza! Who doesn’t love free pizza? In a time when every spoons the eye can see has closed its doors to anyone looking for a night out, having that time to come together for a common goal (again, free pizza) gives you a chance to make what can for many be a very isolating time feel less so, even if – and I’m totally not talking from personal experience here – never win.
2. Halloween 2020
Lockdown 2.0 wasn’t the only scary thing to come out of October. Whilst the haunting prospect of a second lockdown definitely put everyone in a fright, McComb put on a pumpkin carving competition to really drive home the Halloween spirit! All accommodation blocks who entered put on a valiant effort, we had thriller inspired masterpieces and all too relatable creations made from nothing but pumpkins determination and of course, boundless creativity. In the end, the pumpkin that took the crown and the pizza that came with it was this expertly carved but all too familiar sight that is sure to bring back many memories I’m sure you’re all desperate to forget (your welcome):
3. Christmas 2020
After a hard year that has finally drawn to a close, December 2020 felt just that extra bit special as the light at the end of the tunnel seemed just that little bit closer. As you strolled through campus on dark and cold nights, little trees appeared in the windows. Light’s appeared atop shelves above desks, marking the start of Christmas. Now, everyone has something to love about Christmas. Whether you like the presents, the decorations, or maybe you’re a total grinch. But that’s okay because even the biggest scrooge can appreciate the wonders of festive time food. So, for this year, McComb hosted the Christmas bake-off with a grand prize of £20 Asos voucher which went to this lovely masterpiece:
So, as the year concludes, whether you’re reading this as you brave your first semester or you’re in the final semester of your final year, we hope it’s been a good one. But for those of us still here, let’s look ahead to all the good there is in this year and the many more to come!
