Things to consider when looking for university accommodation

Student Life

When moving into University accommodation there is a lot to consider. It is a very big step for the majority of people, as it’s the first time living away from home, so it is important to get it right.

1. Budget

First of all you need to consider how much money you have at your disposal, as depending on the amount of student loan you receive could affect the type of accommodation you can afford.

Of course you want to live in the best place possible, but you also have to factor in if you’ll have enough to live on throughout the rest of the year, with food and alcohol being quite expensive.

2. Room spec

When committing to something so big you need to make sure you have the right type of room.

You need to consider if what you’re paying is really worth it. You also need to think about what the room contains, and if it is the right place for you.

Something else to consider, is what is included in your contract. You don’t want to be paying over the odds for a room where your bills aren’t included as well.

3. Reviews and Landlords

Before committing to a contract you must make sure that the landlord is reputable.

The best way to do this is by checking reviews by previous tenants to see what type of service they got.

Whilst some landlords will offer a particular service, it is important to make sure that they actually deliver before signing on the dotted line.

Looking at reviews to check the character and reputation of your landlord is key in making sure you have the best experience in their property.

4. Considering your friends

If you are looking for a flat with friends then it is important to meet everyone’s needs.

First of all you need to make each person is truly on board, before looking for a place that suits the entire group.

Compromise is key, with respect needed if some people have reservations about one particular property, as it is a lot of money.

Hi, I’m Amos and I’m a third year sociology and politics student at Edge Hill University. I am a big sports and music fan, and spend most of my time writing about both subjects, either reporting on a match or reviewing a gig. After uni I hope to become a qualified journalist and continue doing more of the same. When I’m not writing, I am either just relaxing or going out. Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading my blogs as much as I enjoy writing them X.
