Things to do in Ormskirk

News

Small but mighty, is probably the best way to describe the thriving market town that is Ormskirk. Edge Hill’s campus alone has been voted top in the North West and is amongst the top 5 in the UK for university facilities. Impressive hey? And that’s before you even scratch the surface of what the rest of the town has to offer.

Getting to know a new place is fun but it can take time, especially if you want to uncover some of the more hidden, less touristy gems. If you’ve been busy studying, or you’ve simply been unable to get out and explore like you normally would due to the pandemic restrictions, then you’ll no doubt be itching to discover what Ormskirk has to offer. So here at McComb Students, we’ve made it easy for you.

As Ormskirk’s premier student accommodation provider, we know Ormskirk inside out and have pulled together a list of some of the best things to see and do. A few may have to go on hold for a while, but we guarantee they’ll be worth the wait.

Activities to enjoy in Ormskirk

Ormskirk offers some fantastic outdoor spaces and beautiful countryside, which you can still enjoy during lockdown. That said, rules around what you can and can’t do at the moment are constantly changing, so be sure to check individual websites beforehand to check for openings and make sure plans don’t get spoilt.

  • Ormskirk Market – appreciate the sights, sounds and tastes of Ormskirk’s traditional street market. With up to 100 stalls selling everything from fresh foods, flowers and clothing right through to books and household goods. A great place to while away time and pick up a bargain.
  • The Chapel – Ormskirk’s very own arts house. Offering visual arts, exhibitions, music and more. Immerse yourself in its vibrant and inclusive culture programme. While you’re there why not check out the café bar too? Serving tasty, locally sourced food alongside craft coffees and beers, and if you’re lucky you might even catch some live music on stage.
  • Mandrakes – pure magic and a must for any J K Rowling fans. This officially licensed Harry Potter coffee and gift shop is a place to relax and enjoy a magical, mystical experience. Who knew coffee could be this much fun!?
  • Ruff Wood – just over the road from Edge Hill, Ruff Wood is a haven for wildlife and a great spot for quiet walks and to escape the hustle and bustle of campus.
  • Coronation Park – situated right in the centre of Ormskirk, this park offers 20 acres of urban green space and a lively calendar of events.
  • Cycling – fun, good for you and free to do! Relatively flat, Ormskirk is great for cycling enthusiasts. You can explore the Cheshire Lines path – a former railway track that runs between Maghull and Ainsdale, and forms part of the Trans-Pennine Trail – or enjoy the several miles of canal towpath that run through the borough, much of which is perfectly suited for bikes.
  • Rufford Old Hall – this National Trust gem is the home for stories and romance, with a picturesque Tudor building and gardens to discover.
  • Mere Sands Woods – get back to nature with this oasis of lakes and woodland.

Nearby…

  • Crook Hall Farm – fancy a spot of fishing? With 3 well stocked fishing ponds, Crook Hall is perfect for pleasure anglers, who can bask in the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful surroundings.
  • Canal cruises – for a special day out with a difference, why not charter a canal cruise along the Leeds Liverpool canal? Trips can include a full English breakfast, afternoon tea or an evening Lancashire hotpot.
  • Martin Mere – with wide-open spaces and wetlands full of the sights and sounds of nature, this WWT has plenty to see and do all year round.
  • Farmer Ted’s – this place is a must for thrill seekers. A kid’s adventure farm by day it’s famed for turning into a spooktacular horror venue every Halloween. A great night out for you and your mates…if you’re brave enough!
  • West Lancashire light railway – are you a secret train geek or do you know someone who is? Then check out this popular attraction, featuring locomotives, wagons and other equipment from long-gone industrial sites in Lancashire.
