Top 5 Netflix Shows to Watch During Lockdown

News

So we’re here again. Another lockdown. Another plague of boredom that has swept the nation, but it doesn’t have to be painfully dull. How about you turn on the TV, sit down with a snack and wait patiently for the lockdown to be over, which – with the right TV Show – will feel like seconds. Here are the Top 5 Netflix Shows to keep you occupied starting with…

5. Cheer

Source: Netflix

Starting off at number five is CHEER. Now hear me out, at first, I thought I was in for a dance moms repeat which I was by no means upset at. Anything as fabulous and drama-filled as dance moms is a yes in my book, but I had no idea that by the end of it I’d be screaming at the TV with every flip, flinching at every cartwheel, every broken bone – yes there are quite a few injuries – and sweating in anticipation on the edge of my seat praying that the Nevaro Cheerleaders win the title, but did they? Well, you’ll have to watch it yourself.

4. Selling Sunset

Source: Netflix

Real estate never looked so good, and never did I think it was so cutthroat. Selling sunset follows the Oppenheim real estate firm in the sunny hills of Los Angeles. But there’s more to meet the eye then pretty houses. Not only is it packed full of Drama, but it’s also refreshing to see women dominate the field so prevalently. Be so independent and in control. That being said, it’s certainly not a bad thing that it is as drama-packed as it is. If the finale hasn’t got you saving money for your wedding then you either didn’t watch the show or are already rich – anyone who’s watched it knows exactly which wedding I’m talking about, and if not? Guess you’ll just have to watch and join the club.

3. Godless

Source: Netflix

Godless, potentially lost to time, is set in the time of the wild west where everyone’s response to a problem was to pull a gun. And sometimes fire it. It follows a young runaway hiding from his murderous mentor. It’s packed full of action, strong female gunslingers, brutal stories of impossible love and a finale that will have your palms profusely sweating for an hour. Though do be warned, the series isn’t for the faint of heart.

2. Bridgerton

Source: Netflix

At number two, we have Bridgerton. This racy regency love story follows (you’ll never guess who) the Bridgertons (what a surprise!), a family of intrigue, influence and scandal. And what is a period drama without a bit of scandal ? From salacious gossip from one particularly rampant writer, to doing anything to avoid scandal in a world where reputations are as fragile as glass. I mean a hug? Really? That was their definition of too far? But at the heart of it is a story of true love. And to the keen ear, several pop classics can be heard in perfect regency violin.

1. Queen’s Gambit

Source: Netflix

If I have to say anything about The Queen’s Gambit it’s just please watch it. Every Time I’ve tried to describe this show I seem to lose people at “It’s about chess,” but I’ll try to do it justice because it’s about so much more. The Queen’s Gambit dorns a charming 60’s setting full of all the trademark iconic fashion and follows Beth Harman, an orphaned chess prodigy, rising the ranks of competitive chess. Which, in of itself, sounds like a dull concept but through storytelling, it showcases the brutal life she faces trying to keep control of her addiction problems, growing up in a world so dominated by men, and genuinely just trying to keep it all together. By the end of the series, you still may not have a clue what’s going on atop the chessboard, but you desperately want her to win.

So there it is, but don’t be fooled, these are only five of the best shows on Netflix (in my most humble opinion) out of a catalogue of thousands. I hope it’s enough to keep you going during lockdown, and if not…well there’s always the banana bread.
