Well we certainly had some fantastic weather in the final weeks of February, and it really was great to get some sun so early in the year. Doesn’t warm weather make us all feel so much better.

Unfortunately, we are now back to more normal conditions. Those warm days were evidently not characteristic of what we would normally expect at this time of year.

Although Spring officially began on 1st March (according to the Meteorological calendar), we mustn’t fall in to the trap of thinking the worst is over. Far from it! We have already seen Yellow weather warnings in the last week for snow and ice. The forecast for the next week also shows cooler weather, and temperatures down in to single figures at night.

Not wanting to be the deliver of doom and gloom news, it is important that we are all prepared for potentially colder weather over the next month.

Although the cold shouldn’t come as a surprise, many of us are not ready for its arrival. If you are prepared for the potential hazards, you will be more likely to stay safe and healthy when temperatures start to fall.

Winter storms and cold temperatures can be dangerous. Stay safe and healthy by planning ahead. Prepare your food supplies, and if you have one, your car.

When planning travel (including the short distance from your McComb accommodation to the uni), be aware of current and forecasted weather conditions.

Wear appropriate outdoor clothing. This can include a tightly woven, preferably wind-resistant coat or jacket; inner layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats; scarves; and waterproof boots.

If you don’t have to travel, or if you are able to work in your accommodation (rather than at Uni), then this could be a safer option.

Ensure your car is always ready for the worst. Maintain antifreeze levels, and check tyres have sufficient tread.

Use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer so the water doesn’t freeze on the screen or block the jets.

Importantly, always keep your mobile charged.

Don’t forget to take care when arriving at Uni (either walking or driving), the main roads may have been gritted, but the main university car parks may not. The result can be one great skating rink. It’s often safer to leave the car at your accommodation, and take the bus.

No one can stop the continuation of winter. However, if you follow these suggestions, then hopefully you’ll be well prepared. Let’s hope Spring weather arrives soon, rather than in just name alone!
