Advice on Moving to University

Student Life

Moving to University for some can be a really daunting and scary thought. However, when you look back you’ll wonder why you were so scared. At University, you really will make incredible life long friends, and have some great memories to look back on. You will probably think you are the only one who is nervous and scared, but actually you’ll find most students are feeling exactly the same as you.

“Fresher’s week” will give you the chance to get to know your fellow students and flat-mates, and at the same give you the opportunity to have some fun before all the lectures and University study commences. For many, this week will always hold the fondest memories.

Here are a few of my tips on moving in to your new accommodation:

Although you will be nervous, try not to isolate your self in your room –

Although you might feel awkward, shy, and nervous, make sure you don’t remain on your own in your room. Remember that all are in the same position as yourself, and the sooner you break the ice, the more confident and relaxed you’ll feel within your accommodation. I would suggest gathering in the communal areas, chatting to your new flat mates, and allowing everyone to come out of their shells. Share some biscuits! Within no time at all, you’ll look back and ask yourself why you were so anxious.

Although you will be shy try to open up as much as possible –

As much as you can try and be open and engage in conversation with as many people as possible. This will help you when you attend Fresher’s events, and make you feel less awkward. By the end of the first week you’ll really feel your new flat is your home. Remember to be yourself and this will really help you to make new friends, and ease into university life.

Try to find people with similar interests as yourself –

Try to get to know your flat mates as soon as possible, to find people with similar interests to your own. This could be as diverse as sporting or shopping. Joining a gym together, or perhaps going on shopping expeditions (perhaps Liverpool) will help you feel more settled.

Most of all make the most of every opportunity you’ll love it and will soon feel like home!
